COUNSELLING

·        Counselling and Psychotherapy overlap, but Counselling is normally a briefer and more focused treatment.

·        Generally in Counselling the emphasis is more on sorting out a current situation.

·        Often those close to us are too involved to be helpful, or we can be so deeply involved with our own feelings about a problem that it can seem very muddled or even hopeless. Commonly we manage to surround ourselves with like-minded people, so it can be extremely difficult to get a fresh perspective.

·        At times we have problems such that we don't want to talk about them to people we know. Sometimes we have problems that those around us simply have no experience or knowledge about.

·        The role of the Counsellor is to provide an impartial, understanding atmosphere in which to explore thoughts and feelings about an issue. The aim is to help the person sort out the muddles; to understand and deal with any difficult feelings involved and ultimately to find their own solutions.

·        Where the problem involves a relationship, if both agree, it can sometimes help to see both together.

·        For some people even one or two sessions can be enough to begin to feel the weight lifted and to begin to believe that there is a way forward.

·        Where difficulties are less specific, or are more clearly to do with basic attitudes and feelings, then Psychotherapy can be more appropriate.
